Francesca de Gasparis, Executive Director of SAFCEI, presented at the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) Public Hearing on 7 June 2024 regarding Eskom’s application for a Long-Term Operation (LTO) License Application for the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant. Our view is that the public participation consultative process has been procedurally unfair. And there are serious, outstanding safety repairs that must be addressed, before the LTO is considered. These "critical" and "urgent" issues (from the IAEA 2022 report) include cracks in the nuclear containment building and the monitoring system that threaten Koeberg's defense-in-depth.
