FLEAT South Africa III: Faith Community-Led Just and Sustainable Energy Transition

From 28–30 July 2026, faith leaders and green champions gathered in Cape Town for SAFCEI’s FLEAT SA III workshop, exploring how faith communities can play a leading role in building a just, inclusive and sustainable energy future.

Across three days, participants moved from understanding the climate and energy crisis to identifying practical ways to take action in their own communities.

🔎 Day 1: Understanding the challenge
Participants explored the Web of Life, the basics of climate change, South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET), and the role of faith and community leadership. Discussions also examined gender and faith, and what energy justice, inclusion and access should look like for communities.

⚖️ Day 2: From awareness to advocacy
The workshop focused on activism, policy and law-making, community participation and rights-based approaches to the JET. Participants explored sustainable energy alternatives and took a deeper look at false solutions to the climate crisis, including, coal, oil and gas, uranium mining and nuclear energy.

✊ Day 3: From ideas to action
The final day focused on advocacy, campaigning, and local action planning. Faith leaders mapped communities and stakeholders, identified opportunities for engagement, and developed practical plans for taking energy justice conversations and action into their communities.

Throughout the workshop, one message stood out: faith communities have a powerful role to play in shaping an energy transition that puts people, communities and the living Earth at the centre.

The workshop concluded with faith leaders developing local action plans and contributing to a shared statement calling for a more just and sustainable energy future.
