"African women in general need to know that it's okay for them to be the way they are - to see the way they are as a strength, and to be liberated from fear and from silence." Prof Wangari Maathai
This Women’s day we think of all the women who are affected by climate change and environmental degradation.
Women make up the majority of the poor population and they are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Women are more dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods, health, food and nutrition security, access to water and energy,
Women still face social, economic and political barriers that limit their coping capacity when it comes to environmental issues. Women are at the forefront of natural resources yet they are the ones that suffer the most from the effects of climate change. It is no secret that most women are not included in decision making around environmental issues.
Women need to be empowered to participate in environmental strategies and plans. They are the custodians of the environment and they are the ones who can be the most effective actors/ agents of change in relation to mitigation and adaptation of climate change in the world. Women have strong knowledge and skills that can be used within mitigation and adaptation plans and women can effectively implement these plans. Let’s empower women to be at the forefront of climate justice and in turn save our planet.
