"Love the earth as you would love yourself"
Although this phrase is sometimes attributed to the American singer-songwriter John Denver, it does highlight and brings together two important foundations of Christian faith and living:
1. Humanity has the responsibility to reflect God's image in creation (Gen 1:26-28);
2. Love of God and by God compels us to love each other and care for each other as we would love and care for ourselves (Mt 22:37-39.)
Taken together, these two foundations of Christian faith and conduct means that we should be representatives and mediators of God's presence and being in all of creation. We realise today, more than ever, that to "love your neighbour" means a self- giving love that is directed at each and every living entity that makes up our natural environment. "Love the earth as you would love yourself".
