PURPOSE Reporting to the Executive Director, the Energy & Climate Justice Programme Manager is responsible for leading the energy and climate justice programme: planning, delivery of the programme objectives, reporting, M&E and line management.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE
- Manage the energy and climate justice programme which includes capacity building, training, mobilisation, advocacy and campaigning for energy and climate justice for Southern Africa.
- Support and build the capacity of people of faith and green champions to engage with and campaign on local, regional, national and international energy and climate justice issues.
- Campaign and advocate for a just energy transition that is ethical and restorative.
- Campaign for a Nuclear Free SA, and against the nuclear build programme which is inappropriate for South Africa’s energy future, especially in the context of climate change.
- Monitor/track energy and climate justice governance in policies/decision making in South Africa and the region, including the media.
- Programme oversight management and delivery to ensure SAFCEI delivers its mission and objectives, according to agreed objectives and indicators with our funders.
- Input to project design and proposal writing to meet programme goals
- Plan and implement programme deliverables to budget and within KPIs, project cycle, and agreed funder budgets and timelines to ensure compliance.
- Line manage and develop the team’s performance and capacity.
- Monitor progress against internally agreed plans and budgets and ensure team delivery to these.
- Commission and write briefs / TOR for consultants for research - technical and legal - on energy and climate justice.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant tertiary education social and environmental justice, and/or sciences;
- A minimum of five years’ experience within the climate and/or environmental justice sectors;
- Excellent writing and reporting skills in order to present complex policy information to affected communities and a wider audience;
- Excellent organising skills for campaigns and advocacy, and to ensure time bound deliveries will be met;
- Being motivated to exchange information with and learn from colleagues and movements;
- Being willing to work as part of a dynamic and varied team;
- Demonstrated computer literacy and online applications like google documents;
- Experience and knowledge regarding the use of social media platforms for campaigning;
- A current driving license;
- Proficiency in more than one South African language, a strong spokesperson;
- Committed and hard working with attention to detail;
- Ability to problem solve and propose suggested solutions;

JOB CONTENT Programme planning and developmentPlanning is done to ensure that activities are completed against agreed objectives, budgets and timelines for energy and climate justice.
- SMART plans are completed and adhered to.
- The programme team is supported in planning and delivery.
- Progress against planned activities and KPIs are monitored monthly in one to ones.
Ensure delivery of effective energy and climate justice programme advocacy and campaigns.
- Advocacy and campaign targets and indicators are achieved and reported on.
Plan activities against the programme budget.
- Activities are planned and executed against the budget that are accurate, complete, and meet agreed objectives and deliverables.
Engage and mobilise the faith leader network throughout the Southern and East African region.
- Ensure a broad & committed network of active faith communities that are involved in advocacy and campaign activities through regular (at least monthly) planned engagements.
Give programme input into fundraising applications.
- Ensure proposals reflect learning and delivery.
Maintain database and ensure data collection.
- Ensure faith leaders are added into existing CRM.
- Data collection of faith leaders’ engagements and actions against agreed indicators is done monthly and reviewed after each event.
Ensure effective systems for data collection, collation, analysis, and reporting.
- Data is collected, collated, analysed on a monthly / quarterly basis against deliverables and indicators to ensure learning and effective action.
- Additional data collected in order to measure outcomes and impact.
PolicyParliament meetings and other policy discussions on climate and energy including energy portfolio committees and other fora are attended and documented.
- Outputs from government meetings are tracked and recorded for information and progress incountry on energy and climate issues (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia).
Research climate and energy developments, and nuclear energy issues in particular.
- Nuclear energy is understood and presented regularly to SAFCEI audiences, with the outcome of research clearly visible in all climate justice campaign and advocacy activities.
Attending conferences and meetings.
- Events to attend are prioritised, and a list of conferences and meetings attended and listed in the monthly activity report.
Campaigns
Developing campaign plans that are consistent with the energy and climate justice issues and our ‘no nuclear’ campaign strategy and objectives and making sure that these are clear and accessible.
- Campaign plans are defined with clear deliverables, realistic timelines, achievable objectives, that reflect SAFCEI strategic plans, are approved internally, and made available and accessible to internal and external parties where necessary.
- Mobilising faith leaders to be part of the campaign and ensure people of faith are supported to take local actions.
Conduct workshops with faith communities on climate change and energy justice, as well as on nuclear energy.
- Campaign mobilisation workshops are scheduled as per the plan, shared with colleagues, interested faith leaders are identified, invited, and engaged with to build understanding.
Team management and developmentManage performance and employee relations of the team.
- Clear goals are communicated, and a sense of accountability is instilled through leading by example.
- Each team member receives accurate monthly feedback on their performance.
- Employee leave is managed to ensure work continuity and achievement of goals.
- Grievances and complaints are resolved timeously.
- Disciplinary issues addressed as per policy.
Ensure compliance and regular reportingSubmit narrative reports on SAFCEI’s work & outcomes against budget expenditure.
- Reports are effective, well-documented, timeous, accessible to the target audience.
Write a monthly report on team achievements against KPIs.
- Reports and data process analysis are effective and identify risk and challenges, highlight successes, and make recommendations for improvement.
