Harmful Impacts of AGRA in Its 13 Focus Countries: Key issues of Industrial Farming (AGRA and the Gates Foundation)

SAFCEI hosted on 14 August a webinar on the Hidden Costs of the “Green Revolution” in Africa and SAFCEI’s Call for Reparations.

This one-hour session unpacked the environmental, social, and ethical harms caused by industrial agriculture in Africa. Driven by AGRA (formerly the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) and heavily funded by the Gates Foundation, this model has harmed smallholder farmers, degraded ecosystems, and weakened local food systems.

Our speakers included:

  • Francesca de Gasparis, SAFCEI Executive Director – The Role of SAFCEI in Challenging Industrial Farming in Africa
  • Gabriel Manyangadze, SAFCEI Food & Climate Justice Manager – Key Issues of Industrial Agriculture: AGRA and the Gates Foundation. Click here to download the presentation.
  • Mishkah Moerat, SAFCEI Campaigns Officer – SAFCEI’s Call to Action: Campaign and Open Letter to the Gates Foundation. Click here to download the presentation.

The webinar highlighted the urgent need for reparations for social and ecological damage, and a realignment of funding priorities towards truly sustainable, agroecological farming models.

Since 2021, SAFCEI has been campaigning for the Gates Foundation to stop funding industrial agriculture in Africa. To date, over 300 African faith leaders have signed our open letter, and we are working towards 600 signatures.

Farmers and communities are paying the price for industrial agriculture, but together, we can demand justice.
