The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) believes that people of faith have a moral imperative to speak out and take action against the socio-ecological injustices that face Africa’s peoples and their environment. SAFCEI works with all faiths on issues of environmental justice across the Southern African region. The organisation coordinates a faith leadership environmental advocacy training (FLEAT) programme that provides a platform for common action across the region. The Opportunity: Is your faith community facing high costs of water, electricity and waste? The water crisis across Southern Africa has been a timely reminder of our dependence on nature’s abundance and the impacts of climate change. It is a call to action for us to reduce our impact, or ecological footprint, on creation. While each one of us can make a difference, faith communities are well placed to lead the way. In keeping with its Earth Keeper vision, SAFCEI is offering members of faith communities the opportunity to take part in an eco-audit training workshop. An eco-audit is an action-learning approach, whereby participants learn about renewable energy and energy efficiency (using our resources wisely), as well as conserving water and other resources. Thereafter, you will be able to undertake an effective energy and water audit of your faith centre.

This training is ONLY for Namibian participants. The venue (in Windhoek) will be confirmed in due course. The dates for this workshop are 13-15 November 2018. As space is limited for this workshop, we request that you complete an application form. There will be a selection process, and successful applicants will be contacted after the due date. Participants would need to cover their own transport to the venue. Accommodation and meals during the conference will be covered by SAFCEI. This will be an intense 3-day process of practical audits at selected congregations, as well as collective sharing and learning with our eco audit specialist, Kim Kruyshaar. Audits of energy, water and waste will be demonstrated, and practical interventions will be presented.

Participants will be provided with training on how to easily conduct an auditat their place of worship and homes, and receive SAFCEI’s DIY eco-audit booklet. The training aims to provide: • learning on how to measure and manage water, energy and waste use. • an understanding of the costs of water, electricity and waste, and how to reduce these. • behavioural and technical options to shift to lower use of water and energy and to start recycling. • an easy plan of action that is results-based, saves money, gives you access to resources you need, and cares for the Earth.
