SAFCEI and The Green Connection invites faith leaders from faith communities to participate in a 12-month skills building and advocacy programme on environmental and social justice as part of accelerating South Africa’s just transition from fossil fuels use to sustainable renewable energy use. In particular, SAFCEI is concerned that South Africa seeks to expand its toxic nuclear power generation and extend the life of Koeberg nuclear power plant.
While South Africa’s policies and legislation are supposed to protect livelihoods and promote the use of sustainable renewable energy, the experience on the ground shows no meaningful involvement of local communities in decision-making processes affecting them. Empowered and mobilised communities can ensure that local voices count by influencing policy and legislation energy, to protect the land and ocean upon which we depend, and oppose the continued use of nuclear energy as part of South Africa’s energy future.
Applicants from faith communities from the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape are invited to email us by 10 March 2022 with a Curriculum Vitae and a motivational letter explaining how they think their participation in the programme will enable them to contribute more to their communities, benefit them personally as well as their communities; explaining their current community involvement in fighting for environmental and social rights, and declaring their commitment to support advocacy work to oppose nuclear energy. Additionally, a supporting letter from your faith leadership would be desirable.
Please note that this is not an employment opportunity, but a collaborative space for activists from diverse faiths to advance South Africa’s transition from fossil and nuclear fuels use to sustainable renewable energy use through amplification of local community voices advocating for the respect, protection, and promotion of our constitutional rights.
To apply for this course, send your CV, motivational letter and this application form to info@safcei.org.za.
